COMPARING PRICES RECEIVED FOR FENCING

There is no way to do a job cheaper unless corners are cut, and the cheapest time to do the fence is the first time. It is not possible to do a good cheap job. It is not possible to do a good job cheap. The most economical way is to do the job properly the first time.

SOME COST CUTTING PRACTISES TO BE AWARE OF:

COST CUTTING

RESULT

SHALLOW POST HOLE, CUT POST OR SHORT POST

A post is a certain depth for a reason and to cut it off, for speed, because you can’t get it in to the correct depth weakens the strength of the fence.

A cut at the top also lets in the weather to the wood and thereby reduces the effectiveness of the tanalyzing.

Short posts won’t standup to the pushing and reaching of animals and therefore break off.

COST CUTTING

RESULT

LARGER DISTANCE BETWEEN POSTS, SHORT STAY BARS, WRONG HEIGHT OF THE STAY BARS

These make the cost of the fence cheaper, but once again, they definitely weaken the fence.

The fence will look alright when it is new but after one or two seasons (eg. a winter) then the posts will start to pull over and leave the fence weakened.

The height of the stay bars is extremely critical because if they are too high or too low it can act like a lever and prise the strainer out of the ground

COST CUTTING

RESULT

SOFTER, CHEAPER WIRE

This does not have the same pulling strength and therefore does not stand up to the wear and tear that animals give it with pushing against the wire and reaching through.

The cheaper wire may not allow the wires or the netting to be pulled tight enough and therefore as the fence ages, the wire sags and allows animals to push through it, thereby not doing the job the fence was designed to do.

GATES

Gates, of course, are a very essential part of a fence line. They need to be swung in a very precise way to ensure easy opening, closing and swinging.

The size of the strainer that the gate is swung on is very important as it must not only carry the weight of the gate, but also the continual moving when opening and closing. It is important that the gate does not drag on the ground. Options include having the gate swing through or open against a fence line.

To be stock-proof and secure, the width of the gateway after the posts have been driven must be exact, with allow-ance for the gudgeons. Summerfield Fencing use only thru-post gudgeons as the screw-in variety give trouble after some time even though they are cheaper to start with. The tops of double gates should always match in the centre when closed.

Summerfield Fencing pride ourselves on driving the posts in a straight line. This adds value to your property by the overall aesthet-ics and it is also very necessary when timber needs to be nailed on one side of the post for the likes of post & rail fences, yards, sheds, walls etc. With each post varying in diameter, there is great skill and experience required for this exact straight line.

Summerfield Fencing make wooden gates of any design and metal gates to fit any size.

Summerfield Fencing also build cattle yards from small to very large, square to round and sheds of all descriptions.

We at Summerfield Fencing have received our Tertiary level Certificate for ACC Workplace Management Practices. This is the highest level that can be achieved, and is given in recognition of the Health and Safety and training and procedure practices we have in our Company. A great achievement and one we are proud of.

We also self assess and have annual audits from a professional source, for our Health and Safety Policy and our Quality Assurance Policy. This keeps us on our toes for ongoing quality and safety. Every two years, we put our staff through a First Aid course, and this certificate is valid for 2 years. Every 2nd month we have a training day, and a staff meeting and a Health and Safety meeting. This keeps our staff skills level up and also irons out any discrepancies in the Company.

We have a comprehensive Independent Employment Agreement which is fair and lays everything on the line for both parties. We provide our employees with safety protective clothing such as steel capped boots, sun glasses, ear muffs and safety goggles and chaps.

We have a very comprehensive Staff Manual which details how to build a fence the Summerfield way, all the Health & Safety notes for fencing, the appropriate forms to fill in for various activities, such as time off, annual leave, incident reporting etc

Summerfield Fencing Ltd have a $3 million Public Liability Insurance and all our vehicles and equipment are insured, warranted and registered and regularly main-tained and are fully equipped with fire extinguishers, first aid kits and fencing tools.
